A Colombo Airport experience

Colombo Airport waiting

Bandaranayake Airport Colombo

At times the arrival hall can be fully packed and even finding a seat can be a problem.

Outside the airport it is sometimes very hot and humid as well as extremely busy when many planes arrive in particular during the high season around Christmas.

The only public transport is a bus to Colombo which leaves every 30 minutes connecting the Central bus station and the Colombo Fort trainstation.

However, only experienced travelers are recommended to use public transports in Sri Lanka due to various risks.

Hiring a taxi with ac to Colombo costs some 2.500 rupees, to Kandy 7.000 rupees and to Galle some 8.500 rupees

One has to know that a drive to Kandy can take up to 3 hours and to Galle around 4 to 5 hours depending upon the traffic situation.

Unfortunately many drivers try to overcharge drastically and it makes sense to insist on the above mentioned rates even at night. The best thing is to ask a hotel for a pick up. However, they also try to overcharge.

Departure procedures at Colombo airport are fairly moderate and it is kind of unlikely that the Tamil Tigers will blow up a plane as such an incident would even weaken their position a lot.

Nevertheless, security staff is taking it`s job serious, but without overdoing it like it happens at several European and at most American airports.

A nice variety of duty free stores and beverage places make departures pleasant and comfortable. Also the lounges are modern, nice and cool.

Definitely it is fun to go through Colombo airport.
